Ice Hockey Drops 2-1 Setback To Fitchburg State

Fitchburg, MA --- Junior Justin Quinn (Braintree, MA) connected for the game-winning goal at 10:55 of the third period to lift the Fitchburg State ice hockey team to a 2-1 MASCAC victory over Worcester State this evening at the Wallace Civic Center.

After a scoreless second period, Fitchburg State (2-3, 1-1 MASCAC) finally broke the game's 1-1 deadlock as Quinn collected his first goal of the year midway through the frame. The junior forward took a feed from classmate Cory Callen (Annadale, NJ) and senior Brett Provost (Ludlow, MA) and slipped in past Worcester State (1-3-1, 0-2-1 MASCAC) fourth-year net-minder Bryan Kalczynski (Tonawanda, NY) for the eventual game-winning marker.

Early in the contest, the Falcons opened with a 1-0 lead as Callen recorded his first goal of the season with a power-play marker at the 11:37 mark. Worcester State battled back towards the end of the first period, using a Tim D'Orazio (Jamison, PA) marker at 19:44 to knot the score.

Both teams defensive stood strong throughout the contest, as play went scoreless for almost 30 minutes. Between the pipes, senior Bobby Leiser (Monroe, NY) was strong for Fitchburg State, stopping 32 of 33 shots for his first victory of the season, while Kalczynski posted 24 saves for the visitors.

For the contest, Worcester State held a 33-26 (23-14 in 2nd-3rd period) advantage in targets, while Fitchburg State converted the lone power-play, finishing 1-for-5 on the evening. WSU was 0-for-7 with the extra man edge including three power plays in the final period.

Fitchburg State will be back in action on Tuesday as it hosts Becker College at 7 PM. Worcester State will battle UMass Boston next Saturday for the PAL Cup hosted by Southern New Hampshire University at 4:30.
