Ice Hockey Blanks Salem State, 4-0

Salem, MA --- Senior netminder Bryan Kalczynksi (Tonawanda, NY) recorded his first shutout of the season as he stopped all 30 shots he faced to help lead Worcester State to a 4-0 triumph over Salem State in MASCAC ice hockey this afternoon.

The loss hands Salem State (5-3-1, 3-2-1) its second conference loss and gives the Lancers (4-4-2, 2-3-1) its second victory in the MASCAC.

After the Vikings controlled possession for most of the first period, it was Worcester State who got on the board first. Junior Paul Conceison (Burlington, MA) hit a wrist-shot into the back of the net seven and half minutes into the first period to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

With a 14-4 led in shots in the opening frame, Salem State had a number of opportunities to score, including a power play and a rush of shots at the end of the period, but Kalczynski stood strong and Salem State was unable to capitalize.

The Lancers increased their lead to 2-0 at the 4:31 mark of the second period. Freshman Brenton Dyok (Rocklin, CA) redirected a slap shot past the right goalie pad and was assisted by sophomore Cody Osburn (Sacramento, CA) and classmate Jordan Roberts (Littleton, MA). Later in the period, the Lancer senior Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, PA) received a pass that went between the legs of a Vikings' defender and he went top-shelf to give Worcester State a 3-0 lead.

Osburn was credited with his second assist along with fourth-year John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA). Worcester State made it 4-0 in the third period when Cahalane added an unassisted goal at 7:56.

The Vikings' goaltender junior Sam Avoine (Ste-Perpetue, Quebec) had 13 saves in the defeat as they outshot the Lancers 30-17 for the contest.

Salem State's next game will take place after the break on January 2nd at home against Colby College at 6:00 PM. Worcester State plays again January 6th at 2:30PM against Nichols College in Worcester.
