Ice Hockey Drops 4-1 Decision To UMass Dartmouth

N. Dartmouth, MA --- UMass Dartmouth Rob Dudley (Douglas, MA) netted a pair of first-period goals to help lead the Corsairs to a 4-1 victory over Worcester State in men's MASCAC ice hockey action this afternoon at Hetland Arena.

With the win UMD improves their record to 8-3-1 and 4-1-1 in conference play while the Lancers slip to 5-6-2 and 2-4-1 in league action.

Dudley scored his goals 3 1/2 minutes apart, in the opening period as the first came 35 secconds into the first power play of the contest and the second was an unassisted tally at the 8:05 mark. On Dudley's first marker he recieved assists from senior Nick Marquis (Londonderry, NH) and fourth-year Mike Owens (S. Boston, MA).

Worcester State would waste a pair of power play opportunities at the end of the first and at the beginning of the second period before freshman Nathan Stanley (Boise, ID) helped the Lancers slice into the deficit with the extra man advantage as he had some help from classmates Cory Osborn (Sacramento, CA) and Andrew Pierson (Clovis, CA).

But the Corsairs would score an insurance marker with 4:52 remaining in regulation on the first goal of the season for Marquis on dishes by Owens and junior Zach Helper (Sarver, PA).

The Blue and Gold would pull senior netminder Bryan Kalczynksi (Tonawanda, NY) in favor of an extra skater with 1:08 left, but the move didn't work out as Owens scored an empty net goal for what was the final score on a pass from Helper.

Kalczynksi finished with 20 saves while junior Ryan Williams (Milton, Ontario) was solid, stopping 35 of the 36 shots he saw on the night.

The Lancers would actually outshoot their opponents 36-24 in a relatively clean game that only saw five penalties between the two squads. WSU led in shots through the first two periods, 27-16.

Worcester State will play their first home game of the semester with Westfield State at Horgan Rink at 6:30 on Saturday. UMass Dartmouth begins the first of three away contests starting with Salve Regina on Thursday at 5:30 PM.
