Plymouth State Ousts Ice Hockey From MASCAC Tournament Semifinals

Holderness, NH --- Plymouth State senior Chris Zaremba (Colorado Springs, CO) and junior Kyle Greco (Hillside, IL) both combined for three assists and three tallys in a balanced scoring attack to help the top-seeded Panthers defeated #5 Worcester State, 7-1, in the semifinals of the MASCAC Men's Ice Hockey Tournament this evening at Hanaway Rink.

The Panthers (16-6-3) got on the board early at the 3:06 mark of the first period when junior Tim Visich's (Mount Pleasant, MI) bid slipped underneath senior keeper Bryan Kalczynski's (Tonawanda, NY) pads for the 1-0 advantage.

Sophomore Phil Arnone (Litchfield, NH) helped Plymouth State score one of their four power play goals as they finished 4-for-8 for the contest with the extra man advantage. Arnone would deflect a lose puck in the middle of the ice right into the net with 10:09 on the clock.

The Lancers (9-15-3) score their only goal of the contest on the first marker of the season by junior Pat Styckiewicz (Ludlow, MA) on assists from sophomore teammates Jordan Roberts (Littleton, CO) and Ryan Quirk (Brockton, MA) just before the end of the first frame at 14:31.

But the Panthers would prove to be too strong with three goals in the middle stanza and the hosts would hold a 13-7 edge in shots.

Junior Alex Cottle (West Chester, PA) made the margin 3-1 with 6:45 on the clock before Greco and sophomore Travis Stevens (Montclair, CA) scored 57 seconds apart to end the period with the four goal advantage.

Plymouth State would score two more times in the third for highest output of the season goals senior Chris Zaremba (Colorado Springs, CO) as both came in the final 10 minutes of the contest.

Third-year Jack Astedt (Angleholm, Sweden) helped propel a solid defensive effort by the Panthers stopping 28 of 29 shots for the hosts. Kalczynski collected 26 saves in the losing effort.

With a sensational effort between the pipes this season Kalczynski ends the campaign with the lowest goals against average in team history (2.65) while his save total is tied for the third-most ever (723). In his two seasons at WSU, he has the second-lowest career GAA in the 45 years ice hockey has been a varsity program (2.87).

Senior Nick Asterito (Philadelphia, PA) ends his four-years donning a Lancer uniform tied for 25th on the all-time scoring list with 31 goals and 52 helpers for 83 points while classmate John Cahalane (Tewksbury, MA) ends his career tied for 29th with 77 points (38 goals – 39 assists).
