Ice Hockey Edges Assumption, 2-1, Moves To City Shooutout Title Game

 

Burrillville, RI --- Freshmen classmates Conor Matsen (LaGrange, KY) and Cody Brier (Marlboro, MA) each scored their first collegiate goals as the Lancers picked up their first win of the campaign with a 2-1 decision over Assumption in the Worcester City Shootout on Saturday evening.

Worcester State (1-6) is slated to play the Becker in a rematch of the inaugural Worcester City Shootout at 3:10 PM tomorrow. Assumption (1-8) will compete in the consolation game against host Nichols at 12:10 Both matchups will be played at Levy Rink in Burrillville, RI

Matsen put the Lancers ahead 1-0 at the 14:59 mark as he buried a rebound that caromed off the right pad of the netminder. The attempt on goal originally taken by classmate Mike Leskun (Geneva, IL) and rookie Joe White (Wonderlake, IL) also received credit on the play.

Each team took nine shots on goal in the penalty-free stanza.

The second period saw the Ice Dogs outshot the Lancers 13-6 while Assumption went 0-for-2 on the power play.

Sophomore Brennen Shaw (Presque Isle, ME) then tied up the contest for Assumption off a shot from senior Keven Meehan (Melrose, MA) at 9:24 in the third period. Meehan carried the puck into the zone, took a wrist shot off the right pad of the goaltender as the puck trickled to Shaw who then stuffed it in the bottom right corner of the cage for a short-handed tally.

Then about three minutes later, the Lancers reclaimed the lead as Brier received the puck from junior Jordan Roberts (Littleton, CO) and wrapped it around the net before finishing the play by burying the puck in the net.

Assumption junior Bobby Bowden (Springfield, MA) suffered the loss as he faced 21 shots. Freshman Salvatore Tecci (Franklin, MA) turned away 30 of 31 shots taken by the Ice Dogs in his first start for the Blue and Gold.
