Lancer Drops Home Battle with Mustangs

Worcester, MA- After a thrilling opening weekend that saw Worcester State (1-1-0, 0-0-0) claim their first victory of the season over Assumption in the WooCup Consolation match, the Lancers returned to home ice tonight to take on the SUNY Morrisville Mustangs (0-2-0, 0-0-0).

Final

Worcester State: 2

Morrisville: 6

How it Happened:

Worcester and Morrisville, both strong teams wanting to go home with the win, kicked off the opening period each determined to find success. It was clear from the first puck drop that these two teams were going to be evenly matched on the ice with Morrisville offensively strong but Worcester defense was up to the challenge. Morrisville would be the first to score in tonight's game after an offensive scrum in front of the net found the opening in the top right corner making the score 1-0. The remainder of the period saw Morrisville's offense stay on the attack but Worcester was able to hold their ground defensively and with the help of the goalie senior Wyatt Friedlander (Lake Placid, NY) with a total of 15 great saves to prevent the Mustangs from extending their lead.

Worcester came out in the second period hungry for a goal which saw their forward line more aggressive and determined. After multiple attempts by Worcester's offense sophomore Maximilian Hussar (New Canaan, CT) would put Worcester on the board with the assists from graduate student Brian Clougherty (Lynn, MA) and senior Matthew Kowal (Monson, MA) tying the score up 1-1. Morrisville was not going to give up their lead just yet when they went and scored three back to back goals extending their lead 4-1.

The third and final period was much like the second. Worcester is the first to score this period when junior Shane Prifrel (Inver Grove Heights, MN) took the puck down the ice and found a great opportunity to send it into the back of the net 4-2. Morrisville would then get re-energized and yet again grab two back to back goals furthering their lead even more making the final score 6-2.
