Worcester, MA- The Lancers Men's Ice Hockey team (1-4, 0-1) returns to action at the Fidelity Bank Ice Center tonight to take on their second conference foe in Rivier University tonight.
Final
Worcester State: 3
Rivier: 3 (Win Shoot-Out)
How it Happened:
In tonight's matchup between the Lancers and the Raiders the players wasted no time getting up close and personal. As bodies flew off the glass both teams showed their toughness and desire to win. Worcester State was able to get off an impressive amount of shots, keeping the pressure on Rivier's goalie. Despite the offensive efforts made by Worcester the Raiders were able to focus down and knock in the first goal of the game. Leaving the first period with the Lancers down 1-0.
The second was just as exciting as the both teams came out with different strategies looking to claim a piece of the momentum. Shying away from physicality seemed to be the answer for both teams as they played strategically, passing the puck around the ice taking quality shots. This worked as the Lancers were able to put up a whopping three goals in the quarter, two of them scored by senior Brigham Neuhold (Edmond, OK) the other by graduate student Brian Clougherty (Lynn, MA). Rivier was also able to notch another goal to keep the game close going into the third to push a 3-2 lead for Worcester.
The third quarter would find Rivier tie it up and an overtime period would be unable to crown a winner forcing the first regular season shootout for Worcester. With Rivier making one of their three attempts to Worcesters none, they claimed the decider in the match. The game, while registered as a tie, was decided by the shootout in the Raiders favor.
What's Next:
The Lancers (1-5, 0-2) will remain at home for their next battle at 7pm on Saturday when they host the Falcons of Fitchburg State.
