Men's Soccer Hands Union First Loss of the Season

Worcester State 2, Union 1

Box Score

SCHENECTADY, NY --- Worcester State scored in the 82nd minute to grab a 2-1 lead and give the Dutchmen soccer team its first setback of the season.

With the loss Union goes to 2-1-0, while Worcester State improves to 2-0-1. Freshman midfielder Kevan Benn (Ottawa, Ont) tallied Union's goal, his second of the season.   Bann broke the scoreless drought less than two minutes before the half when he won the ball in a scrum in the middle of the penalty box. The goal was the freshman's second in two games and he now leads the Dutchmen with two tallies.

The game remained up for grabs for the majority of the first half until Bann found the net. Union set the pace with seven shots, including three on goal in the opening stanza. The Lancers put one on goal, which senior goalkeeper Rob Kramer (Westport, CT) handled with ease.

The Union backline of junior John Mara (Concord, MA), junior Brendan Steiner (Madison, CT) and senior Kevin Donovan (Hanover, MA) stood strong and only allowed Worcester one corner kick for the entire game.

At 74:18 Lancers' leading scorer Brian Andrade (Hudson, MA) found goal when he was set up by freshman forward Andrew Babineau (Webster, MA).

Less then nine minutes later Andrade redeflected a deep free kick by senior midfielder Paul Membrino (Brimfield, MA) with his head to sneak the ball past Kramer. Membrino sent a line-drive attempt deep into Union's zone and Andrade got his head on it at the last second.   Kramer finished with five saves, while his counterpart, sophomore Daniel Hansen (Worcester, MA) tallied four.

Both teams had one corner kick and Union held the advantage in shots 19-9.

The Dutchmen return to action on Saturday when it hosts John Jay during the final day of the Union Men's Soccer Classic.
