Schenectady, NY -- Senior midfielder Lincoln Field (Contoocook,
NH) scored two goals and junior goalkeeper Alex Penny (Northport,
NY) made key saves to preserve the victory and shutout as
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute defeated Worcester State, 4-0 in
the second game of the 2009 Union Classic Men's Soccer Tournament.
The game was played at Union's College Park Field Friday night.
Senior forward Jabel Prom (Sandy Spring, MD) and sophomore forward
Julian Coy (Bristow, VA) also scored for the Engineers, who had a
27-8 shot advantage for the night.
Field opened the scoring with an unassisted score at 26:39, as he
cut into the middle and drove a low shot left of Lancer goalkeeper
Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA). Field made it 2-0 at
53:51 on a penalty kick. At 77:21, Prom's first of the year came
when he took a cross from Sean Fleury (Princeton, MA) and tapped it
in inside the left post. Coy capped off the scoring when he took a
pass from Zach Fane (Troy, NY) and deposited the ball around the
left side of the keeper.
Although Penny made just four saves, two were outstanding stops for the Engineers. With 13:03 left in the first half he made a stunning save and later made a diving stop near the left post off a blast from David Gustafson (Webster, MA) with 40:09 remaining. Wilga also made eight stops in the setback.
Union 6, Worcester State 0
Schenectady, NY -- Marc Zeyak (Valatie, NY) scored twice and
Sebastiaan Jensen (Cape Town, RSA) assisted twice with a goal as
the Union men’s soccer team defeated Worcester State, 6-0 in
the Union College Classic at College Park Saturday night. The
Dutchmen won both games of the tourney to open the season, while
the Lancers now stand 0-3 overall.
Union outshot the Lancers, 27-5, including 16-1 in building a 3-0
first half advantage. Other goal scorers for the Dutchmen were Dan
Dubrow (Woodbridge, CT), Jack Scott (Huntington, NY) and John Manna
(Acton, MA). Adam Marguilies (Newtown, CT) played over 61 minutes
and Ryan Green (Santa Barbara, CA) played over 28 minutes, stopping
two, for the shutout.
Union had a 4-2 advantage in corners. Zeyak scored the first two
goals of the game. At 6:26 he took a rebound of a punch out
direction by goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA)
and blasted home his second of the season. Jensen assisted on
Zeyak’s goal at 37:33 and also set up Dubrow’s goal at
38:11 to end the first half scoring.
Jensen scored his second of the year when he interecepted an
attempted clear and dribbled in along at 55:05. Scott (54:42) and
Manna (71:53) wrapped up Union’s second straight shutout win.
The Lancers next opponent will be St. Joes of Maine on Wednesday
at 4 PM on the road.
