Box Score

Westfield, MA --- Sophomore forward Josh Severns (Suffield, CT) scored three goals to power Westfield State to a convincing 6-0 conference victory over Worcester State in men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

Westfield, which began the season 0-4-1, is now 6-6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Mass. State Conference (MASCAC). Westfield is tied for second place in the MASCAC with Framingham State. Bridgewater State holds the top spot at 5-0 after edging Salem, 2-1 on Saturday.

Worcester State drops to 2-11-2 and 0-2-2 in the conference with the setback.

Severns scored the deciding goal in the sixth minute after collecting a rebound off a wicked shot by teammate Tim Parsons (Buzzards Bay, MA). With the goalie out of position after making the save on Parsons' shot, Severns easily deposited the ball into the net.

The Owls - who overwhelmed the Lancers with their speed and ball handling - scored in the 38th minute on a nice goal in the box by Kevin Andrade (Acushnet, MA) after a throw-in from Justin Laliberte (Easthampton, MA).

Laliberte also assisted on the third goal, which was scored by Severns in the 54th minute.

Parsons scored a spectacular goal four minutes later with an assist from Andrade. Parsons took a shot from the right side about 20 yards out that hit both the cross bar and left post, then rolled across the goal line hitting the right post before trickling into the net.

Parsons assisted on Severns' hat trick goal, which came with exactly 25 minutes remaining in the game. Sophomore Kyle Yelin (Southwick, MA) scored Westfield's sixth and final goal in the 72nd minute.

Sophomore Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) and junior Fred Groos each split time between the pipes for Worcester State. Wilga finished with five saves in 65 minutes of action while Groos allowed just one goal in 25 minutes of action. Westfield State keepers Lucas Dexter and Jeff Pepoli each combined for three saves in the shutout.

Both teams will play non-conference opponents on Wednesday. Worcester State travels to Wheaton for a 3 o'clock showdown while the Owls entertain Rhode Island College at 7 PM.
