Men's Soccer Defeats Clark 1-0 in Non Conference Matchup

Worcester State 1, Clark 0

Worcester, MA --- Freshman Alex Wolfel (Unionville, CT) potted the only tally on an assist from sophomore Eduardo Cazares (Shrewsbury, MA) as Worcester State snapped a four-game skid to post the 1-0 triumph over Clark this afternoon in non conference men's soccer action at Coughlin Stadium.

After a scoreless contest at the half, Wolfel put the Lancers (3-8) on the board in the 65th minute when the hosts took advantage of a breakaway. With a two on two matchup, Cazares made a pass to Wolfel who shot it past the keeper from 10 yards out for his team-leading third marker of the season.

The Blue and Gold then held off three shots and the physical game play of the Cougars for the hard earned victory.

Worcester State nearly scored in the 20th minute when Wolfel had a chance to score on a cross from senior Kerlenz Benjamin (Cambridge, MA), but sophomore Ryan King (Brimfield, MA) wrapped up the ball to end the threat.

Clark (4-4-1) would have three of the first half's five shots as their best bid came on a nice boot from freshman Josh Demers (Warwick, RI) in the 15th minute, but his attempt sailed to the left of the net.

The Cougars ended the game with the 11-6 advantage in shots while both teams were tied in corners (3-3).

Junior goalkeeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) recorded four stops in his third shutout of the season while King collected three saves in the loss.

Both teams continue their respective league schedules with games on Saturday. Worcester State heads to Bridgewater State for a noontime MASCAC game while Clark entertains the Lyons at 1 PM in NEWMAC action.
