Mass Maritime Defeats Men's Soccer, 2-1, At Home

Worcester, MA --- Freshman Asa Mills (Westport, MA) sent in his first career goal for the game-winner to break a tie game in the 53rd minute to help lift Mass Maritime to a 2-1 triumph this evening over Worcester State in MASCAC men's soccer action.

The Buccaneers (5-9, 1-4 MASCAC) got on the scoreboard first in the 12th minute when senior Kevin McCord (Norwell, MA) netted his team-leading sixth goal of the season on a cross from sophomore Tim McDonough (Framingham, MA).

The Lancers nearly responded 11 minutes later when sophomore Eduardo Cazares (E. Longmeadow, MA) made a great read on an open look, but his attempt hit the post.

Junior Christopher Hinds (Westborough, MA) would eventually score the equalizer for Worcester State as he netted his first career marker off a pass from classmate Julian Morales (Brighton, MA), as the play came off of a corner kick.

That set the stage for Mass Maritime to take the lead with seven minutes off the clock in the second stanza as they earned thier first conference victory of the 2010 campaign.

The Lancers held leads in shots (16-12) and corners (5-4) as they were also offsides seven times as opposed to twice for the visitors.

Third-year keeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) turned side three shots in the setback while sophomore Patrick Slaney (Northbridge, MA) notched two saves in the victory.

Both squads will play non conference opponents on Wednesday. Worcester State travels to UMass Dartmouth for a 3:30 matchup while Mass Maritime will entertain WPI at 7 PM.
