Wolfel Leads Men's Soccer To 5-1 Victory Over Massachusetts Maritime

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Sophomore Alex Wolfel (Unionville, CT) netted a goal and an assist to lead Worcester State to a 5-1 MASCAC men's soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Senior Andrew Babineau (Webster, MA) gave the visiting Lancers (5-6-2, 3-1-1 MASCAC) an early 1-0 lead just 5:01 into the contest after converting a pass from freshman Michael Jordan (Ludlow, MA).

The host Buccaneers (1-10, 1-4 MASCAC) evened matters in the 13th minute when freshman Rob Robbs (Braintree, MA) took feeds from seniors Mike McCarthy (Norwell, MA) and Ryan Fischer (Marshfield, MA) for the equalizer.

Senior Chris Hinds (Westboro, MA) gave Worcester State the lead for good in the 16th minute with an unassisted tally off a scramble in front of the net and sophomore Chris Sanborn (Holden, MA) extended the visitors' edge to 3-1 at the break by converting a Wolfel corner kick with 27 seconds remaining in the opening half.

Wolfel's direct kick conversion in the 81st minute gave the Lancers a 4-1 cushion and senior Kerlenz Benjamin's (Cambridge, MA) penalty kick conversion after a foul in the box with 4:31 to play closed out the scoring for the match.

Senior Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) picked up the win in goal for Worcester State with a seven save effort, while sophomore Brett Young (Falmouth, MA) made four stops in 87-plus minutes of play in the net for Massachusetts Maritime.

The Buccaneers outshot the Lancers by a 17-10 margin for the contest, but WSU had the 9-8 edge with shots on goal. After today's MASCAC action, the Blue and Gold are now alone in second-place in the conference standings.

Massachusetts Maritime heads to Worcester, MA on Wednesday evening to take on WPI in a non-league match that begins at 7:00 o'clock, while Worcester State hosts UMass Dartmouth in a non-league contest on Tuesday evening in Worcester beginning at 7:00 PM.
