Men's Soccer Eliminated From ECAC New England Tournament

Castleton, VT --- Junior Tanner LeCuyer (Plattsburgh, NY) converted a header in the 107th minute to propel the third-seeded Castleton State to a 2-1 double overtime victory over #6 Worcester St. in ECAC quarterfinal action at Spartan Stadium on Wednesday evening.

LeCuyer's header came at the 106:02 mark as he positioned himself on the far side of the net on the corner kick by freshman Dameon Young (Fairfax, VT). Young lofted a great ball to the far side of the net and the junior directed it past the keeper for the golden goal.

The score gave the Spartans their second overtime win of the season and improved their record to 13-6-2 on the year.

Despite the late-game heroics, it was Worcester State (8-9-2) which got on the board first, scoring at the 23:42 mark. With the ball bouncing inside the six, the Castleton defense tried to clear it but it was intercepted by Alex Wolfel (Unionville, CT) just outside the 18. Wolfel took one dribble and rifled a shot into the lower right corner of the net, past a diving Nate Koenemann (Montpelier, VT) for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.

The Spartans had a good chance to tie it in the 11 minutes later when senior Jacob Ferry (Warwick, RI) one-timed a kick to the bottom right corner of the net, only to have Lancer keeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA) get a hand on it and knock it out of bounds.

Six and a half minutes into the second half, Young beat the defense and fired a shot from the right corner of thhe box that looked like it was headed toward the far post before going just wide of the net.

Young finally found the net at the 68:23 mark on a great individual effort. The first-year beat a defender on the along the left baseline and then while still dribbling along the sideline fired a shot which went through the keepers legs and it deflected of his left foot into the goal.

In the first overtime Castleton State fired three shots, including one by Young which hit the crossbar, while Worcester State forced Koenemann to make one save.

In the final ten minutes of action the Spartans kept pressuring the net until the corner by Young found LeCuyer's head for the game-winner.

Koenemann turned aside four shots in net to earn the victory for the Spartans who outshot the visitors 29-12.

Needing just six stops to pass Tony Foutzits (1980-83) on the all-time save list (24 game minimum), Wilga did just that as he is now the career leader in the category.
