Wolfel Paces Men's Soccer In 2-1 Triumph Over Rhode Island College

Providence, RI --- Junior Alex Wolfel (Farmington, CT) tallied twice as he helped lead Worcester State to a 2-1 victory over Rhode Island College in non-conference men's soccer action on Monday evening.

With the win the Lancers up their record to 3-10-2 while the Anchormen slip to 4-11-1.

Wolfel helped the Blue and Gold strike first in the 20th minute after a midle cross was broken up by the hosts. Wolfel then corralled the loose ball, slipped past a defender and blasted a shot from the top corner of the box that just sailed over the head of RIC netminder Christopher Duarte (Cumberland, RI) and into the back of the net.

After both squads maintained a solid defensive effort throughout the remainder of the first half, Worcester State jumped on the board in the opening minutes of the second frame.

In the 52nd minute, Wolfel knifed through the RIC defense en route to a wide open breakaway. However, as he stormed into the box he was taken down by Duarte at the last second to set-up a penalty kick.

Wolfel took advantage of the opportunity and ripped the penalty kick past Duarte for the 2-0 advantage and tie for the team lead with six markers.

Just before the 10 minute mark, the Anchormen got on the board to slice into the deficit.

RIC freshman Camilo Estrada (Pawtucket, RI) launched a long pass down the left side to sophomore Emmanuel Asiedu (Lincoln, RI), who then quickly sent a cross into the middle of the box. That was when second-year Sam Oddih (Pawtucket, RI) pounced on the loose ball and chipped it past Worcester State's keeper for his first collegiate tally.

The Lancers, however, held their groud defensively in the final minutes to keep RIC off the scoreboard. They did not allow another attempt on net for the remainder of the contest.

Rhode Island College led in shots, 20-12, as Worcester State led in shots on goal, 7-6. Corner kicks were even, 5-5.

Freshman Tim Schmidt (Southwick, MA) converted five saves for the Lancers while Duarte turned aside five stops in the setback for RIC.

Worcester State closes out their regular season on Friday with a 7 PM game against MCLA. The Anchormen host in-state rival Johnson & Wales on Tuesday at 6.
