Men's Soccer Comes from Behind to Down Fitchburg State

FITCHBURG, Mass. - The Worcester State University men's soccer team came from behind on Saturday afternoon to defeat Fitchburg State by a final of 2-1 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Elliot Field.

With the win, the Lancers move to 3-4-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the MASCAC. The Falcons drop to 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference.

Fitchburg State nearly grabbed the lead at the 14:59 mark of the first half as junior midfielder Larry Janvier (Milton, Mass.) blasted a shot on target, but Worcester keeper Henri Guilmette (Franklin, Mass.) corralled the ball to preserve the 0-0 stalemate going into the second half.

Following the intermission, the Falcons took a 1-0 advantage in the 53rd minute of play when freshman forward John Javaloyes (Newton, Mass.) found the back of the net for his second marker of the season.

The Lancers knotted the score (1-1) at the 71:41 mark as senior Bryan Brasil (Williamsburg, Mass.) raced up the near side line and tucked the ball inside the far post for his team-leading fourth goal on the year.

Worcester State broke the 1-1 dead lock with just over five minutes left in the contest when senior Ethan Melia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) gathered a loose ball in front of the net and deposited the ball into the upper right corner for his third goal of the 2018 campaign.

In goal, sophomore Branton Abbett (Jasper, Ind.) made three saves for the Falcons in the setback, while Guilmette stopped three shots for the Lancers in the victory.

Up next, the Falcons will travel to Newbury College on Wednesday to take on the Nighthawks for a non-conference matchup, starting at 3:30 PM. Lancers will host the Bulldogs of Dean College on the same day for a non-conference tilt at 7:00 PM.
