Lancers Fall in in Second Half Battle to Beacons

Worcester, MA- After a hard fought battle on Saturday that went down to the final minutes, the Lancers Men's Soccer (3-8-1, 2-2-1) team looks to bounce back as they host former Lancer keeper Andy Ramirez '23 and the UMass-Boston Beacons on Coughlin field. Worcester is looking to come away with a big finish against one of the top LEC squads in their non-conference battle.

Final

Worcester State: 0

UMass-Boston: 1

How it Happened:

It was a hard fought beginning to tonight's match on an unexpectedly beautiful October night. The Lancers came in aggressive early and often putting instant pressure on the Beacons. They put up eight shots in the half keeping graduate student Andy Ramirez (Waltham, MA)  on his toes. Sophomore Dylan Verby (South Setauket, RI) played a stellar first half putting up two of the eight shots for the Blue and Gold, along with that great defense he and his fellow Lancers played to help keep the match tied throughout. Worcester States goalie, first year Sergio Torrado (Arroyomolinos, ES), also played an on point first half with three saves. UMass-Boston also had some rocket shots in the Lancers zone putting up six in half but three would find themselves traveling wide of the frame.

The second half matched the energy of the first as the Lancers and the Beacons went up and down the field trying to gain the advantage. Worcester played a strong half putting up six shots, however UMass-Boston's goalie Ramirez was on point as he saved four of those six shots. The Beacons were able to top the Blue and Gold in the shot category ultimately putting up a strong 14 shots in the quarter. The Lancer's Torrado was able to play a stellar half accounting for nine saves on 14 of those shots. Despite the strong effort put up by the Lancers in the second they could not turn defense into offense and lost the match 1-0 off a near perfect cross from Logan Erickson Potter to Eduardo Chirico that found the back post. Torrado would keep the Lancers in convention though moments later, coming up with a huge penalty kick save that provided continued life in the final minutes to Worcester. Senior Manny Ramirez (Waltham, MA) would take on offensive attack late, working to push the Worcester pressure higher, and while the Lancers made a number of solid dips into the box, the Beacons held off the late comeback to claim the 1-0 victory.
