Northampton, MA --- Senior RJ Stahelski (S. Deerfield, MA) helped pace the Lancers at the non-scoring Smith Winter Classic as he posted a Division III New England Championship qualifying time of 1:24.95 in the 600 meters. Stahelski also added second in the 200 for the best collegiate time with 23.95.
Two underclassman punched their ticket for the DIII's as well as freshman Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) captured first in the high jump (6-01.25) while sophomore Todd Paquin (Pelham, NH) ran solid time of 6.78 in the 55 meter dash in the preliminaries to take fourth overall in the finals (6.81). With thier finishes, both competators each stamped their tickets to the DIII New Englands.
Paquin would finish the meet in third in the long jump (20-11.25).
Sophomore Harrison McCann (Rutland, MA) had a solid day as he tossed fifth in both the weight throw (45-08) and the shot put (43-05.25), distances that are five feet better than his rookie campaign. First-year Steve Fleming (Rehoboth, MA) posted a top finish in the pole vault with a height of 10-06.
Junior Nick Capone (Billerica, MA) notched sixth in the shot put (42-02.75) as sophomore Shawn McCabe (Mansfield, MA) added 10th in the weight throw (39-07.75). Freshman Brian Espinosa (Rehoboth, MA) rounded out the field with a leap of seventh in the long jump (19-06).
The sprinters were also led by freshman Dan McKim (N. Attleboro, MA) who added second in the 55 meter hurdles (8.83) while second-year Jon Parrella (Wilmington, MA) and freshman Kevin Maciel (Tewksbury, MA) placed first (53.89) and second (54.10), respectively, in the 400. Junior Adam Correia (Fall River, MA) timed third in the 200 with a time of 24.03.
Freshman Neil Reilly (Oxford, MA) helped lead the distance corps as he posted a fourth-place time of 9:45.95 in the 3000. Sophomore Greg Babiec (Worcester, MA/Doherty) recorded second in the 1,000 as classmate Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA) was right behind him in third (2:52.97).
Sophomore Kerry Sabanty (Stoughton, MA) chipped in with fourth in the 800 (2:10.39) while Pat Daley (Millbury, MA) took sixth in the 3,000 (9:58.12). Mazeika also came in sixth in the mile run (4:52.42).
The 4x200 relay of Adam Correia, Paquin, sophomore Luke Curtis (Dudley, MA) and Julio Arzu (Lynn, MA) came in second with a time of 1:36.49. The 4x400 relay - anchored by Parella, Maciel, Mazeika and Stahelski - notched third (3:39.20).
Worcester State will compete again next week at the Harvard Open for their last meet in the year 2010.
