Indianapolis, IN --- Worcester State sophomore Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) will be competing in the upcoming NCAA Division III Indoor Championships as he will participate in the 60 meter hurdles at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois.
The starting gun for the first 60 meter hurdle heats will sound at 5:35 PM EST on Friday as the lane one assignment in the first heat.
Gibson, who had reset his own mark from last year in the 60 meter hurdles at MIT (8.46) on January 25, vaulted to the top 25 of the NCAA standings with Worcester State's eighth indoor individual title at the Division III New England Championships with a school-record time of 8.35 on February 15.
One week later on February 22, he shattered the mark with the fifth-fastest time in Division III at the Open New England Championships with a split of 8.15 in the trials.
Gibson also becomes the first male Worcester State student-athlete in 12 years to earn a berth to the Division III Indoor meet. Lancer Hall of Famer Stanley Egbor distinguished himself in 1999-00 with All-American accolades in the 55 meters (5th place) and he was distinguished again during the 2000-01 season he was the National Runner-Up in the 55.
This marks the second consecutive year that the NCAA has taken the top 13 male times, heights and lengths for individuals at the end of the season. The top 10 relays and 13 point scorers in the heptathlon are also chosen for indoor competition.
The finals for the 60 meter hurdles will be held on 2:55 PM EST on Saturday. He will try to beat out junior Adam Scaleese (Longview, WA) of Coast Guard, who has matched Gibson's effort in the indoor track postseason for the Bears. Scaleese is going in the second heat of the trials.
Third-year Sheldon Allen (Boston, MA/Charlestown) of Southern Maine will be the only other New England competitor in the 60 meter hurdles field, who will also join Gibson in the opening heat in lane eight.
Gibson will be among three other male participants at the NCAAs from the MASCAC which will include Tom Gauger (Billerica, MA) of Westfield State in the pole vault, senior Mike McPherson (Mansfield, MA) of Bridgewater State in the shot put and senior Zachary Desrochers (Dracut, MA) of Fitchburg State in the weight throw.
