
Hanover, NH --- Junior Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) helped the Worcester State men's indoor track and field team open the 2014 winter semester in style on Sunday afternoon with a trio of top three finishes at the Dartmouth Relays on Sunday afternoon.
The meet featured top flight competition from several Division I and III schools from around the region along with several area track clubs. The Lancers scored 17 points as a team for seventh place out of 14 scoring squads with the second-most for a Division III institution.
Gibson started off his day by blazing the track in the 60 meters with the ninth fastest time in Division III through the weekend with the top time in the trials (7.00) before he added second overall in the 60 meter hurdles (8.13).
Gibson then ended his afternoon by anchoring the 4x200 meter relay team of junior Stephen Gannon (Mansfield, MA), senior Todd Paquin (Pelham, NH) and classmate Ramses Rafael (Lawrence, MA) which finished in third place (1:33.11).
Paquin also had a strong day, with a solid time of 7.09 for fifth in the trials of the 60 meters for an Open New England qualifier.
Junior Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty), freshman Charles Newman (Westfield, MA) and senior Matthew Alley (Milford, MA) placed 15th (7.24), 19th (7.27) and 25th (7.32), respectively, in the 60 while Newman added his name to the list of Division III New England Championship qualifiers.
Newman and Gannon along with freshman Shane McKinley (Melrose, MA) and classmate Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) timed eighth in the 4x400 meter relay (3:31.32).
In the field, senior Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) was the top Division III finisher with seventh in the high jump (6-4.25) while freshman Sam Weeks (Methuen, MA) and junior Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) were about two feet off each other with a pair of Division III New England qualifiers in the shot put with 17th (44-8.50/13.60m) and 18th (44-05.25/13.54m), respectively.
Junior Robert White (Ludlow, MA) also had a ninth place toss in the weight throw (48-1/14.66m) for a Division III New England qualifer and a new personal best.
First-year Markiesh Harmon (Leominster, MA) rounded out the finishers by placing seventh in the long jump (20-9/6.32m) and ninth in the triple jump (40-00/12.19m).
Next week the Blue and Gold will compete at the Tufts Invitational.
