Five Qualify for Divsion III New England Championships At UMass Boston Open

 

Gibson Earns Inagural MASCAC Track Athlete of the Week Award

 

Roxbury Crossing, MA --- Senior Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) claimed three outstanding finishes, which included the top time in the 60 meter hurdles (8.01), to help pace the Worcester State men's indoor track team in their season opener at the UMass Boston Open held at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Gibson also had the top collegiate finish in the 60 meters (6.93) in second before he ended his day with second overall in the 200 (22.61). In addition to taking over the top spot in the NCAA Division III in the 60 meter hurdles, Gibson's 60 meter time tied for second nationally and his 200 split is fifth in the country.

For his outstanding efforts this week, Gibson was selected as this week's MASCAC Track Athlete of the Week.

Sophomore Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) also qualified for the Division III New England championships with sixth in the 200 (23.07) and 13th in the 60 (7.22).

Barros also ran the anchor leg of the second place 4x400 meter relay (3:32.28) that also included freshman Patrick Scheeler (Wakefield, MA) at lead-off, classmate Marquis Johnson (W. Hartford, CT) and sophomore Shane McKinley (Melrose, MA).

Others who met the Division III New England standard included freshman Ezekiel Kyei (Oxford, MA), who notched third in the triple jump (42-2/12.85 meters), sophomore Sam Weeks (Methuen, MA) tossed fourth in the shot put (44-1.50/13.45m) and senior Robert White (Ludlow, MA) registered seventh in the weight throw (47-6.25/14.49m).

In the 1,000, Scheeler had a strong time of 2:41.50 in third as Johnson and freshman David Caron (Lowell, MA) placed 10th (2:07.02) and 12th (2:08.46), respectively in the 800. Freshman Anthony Lawson (Randolph, MA) added 10th in the 200 (23.26).

Senior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) cleared fifth in the pole vault (12-5.50/3.80m) and sprinted to 11th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.15) while freshman Caleb White (Charlton, MA) was right behind with 12th in the 60 hurdles (9.21).

Rounding out the standouts in the field were Weeks who marked up 12th in the weight throw (41-5/12.62m) and White heaved 14th in the shot put (39-7.75/12.08m).

The Lancers will compete again next semester on Sunday, January 11 at the Dartmouth Relays.
