Field Events Set Pace at Lyon Invitational

Worcester, MA- The Men's Indoor Track team traveled to Wheaton College today to compete in the Lyon Invitational hosted by Wheaton. First year Elvis Velez (Clinton, MA) was the dominant force for the Lancers on the afternoon being a dominant presence throughout the meet.

Velez placed early in the meet racing to a top three finish in the 60m with a time of 7.31 seconds. He was joined in the top 20 by fellow teammates junior Anthony Paolucci (Billerica, MA), who ran a 8.17 seconds, and first year Alan Gomez (Clinton, MA) who crossed the finish in a time of 8.22 seconds. Velez also found himself on the podium with his 24.22 200m dash time, that found him placed solidly in 2nd place. Joining Velez in the top 5 for the 200m was first year  Seth Boudreau (Douglas, MA), whose time of 24.51 placed him in 4th on the afternoon. Senior Daniel Clark (Worcester, MA), Gomez, junior Anthony Paolucci (Billerica, MA), and first year Eliezer Gonzalez (Worcester, MA) rounded out the Worcester State contingent in the race. Boudreau also found himself sprinting again as he raced in the Men's 400m with a time of 54.55.

The distance squad also had a burst of activity on the day with first years James Riley (Shrewsbury, MA) and Andrew Stokes (Wilmington, MA) racing in the mile for the Lancers. First year Alexander Lucier (Gardner, MA) and junior Matt Talbot (Belchertown, MA) squared up in the 800m on the afternoon while first year Alexander Matsuyasu (Newton, MA) had the longest distance of the afternoon, competing in the 3000m.

The Lancers really found their footing in the field events at Wheaton, with junior Jack Houlihan's (Rutland, MA) throw of 13m in the weight throw which saw him finish in third place while teammate sophomore Max O'Connor (Dedham, MA) had a fifth place finish with his 11.4m toss. Matthew Long's 10.38m placed him in the top 10, wrapping up the trio's success with a 7th place finish. O'Connor was additionally successful in the shot put with his 10.96 launch placing him in 5th place, this time with Houlihan right behind him with a 10.94m toss for 6th place. Sophomore Giovanni Casiano (Oxford, MA) put in the jumps for the Lancers, finishing in 10th with a jump of 4.72m in the long jump. First year Taylor Gavaletz (Dudley, MA) had another successful meet with his 12.13m triple jump that found him in 6th on the afternoon while Gonzalez's leap of 10.39m found him in 12th.

The Lancers Track team is back in action next Friday then they compete in the UMass-Boston/UMass-Lowell Invitational at the New Balance Track in Boston.
