Solid Field Events Lead Lancers to Place Third at Silfen Invitational

New London, CT --- Senior’s Jim Macera (Paxton, MA) and Matt Leeds (Bellingham, MA) along with sophomore Nate Starling (Braintree, MA) all finished in first place in their respective events to help lead Worcester State to second place at the Silfen Invitational hosted by Connecticut College.

Coast Guard won the meet with 153 points followed by UMass Dartmouth (140) and the Lancers total of 91 points.

Macera continued his stellar outdoor season as he tossed 47 meters in the hammer throw as Leeds cleared 6.55 meters in the long jump. Leeds also placed fourth in the triple jump (12.76 m) while Macera added fifth in the discus (37.48 m).  

Starling was first in the 110 meters (15.81), fifth in the 100 meter dash (11.41) and tenth in the 200 (24.08).

Sophomore Nick Capone (Billerica, MA) and freshman Connor Greene were both fourth in the shot put (13.07 m) and javelin (44.48 m), respectively, as junior Tyler Russell (Princeton, MA) was sixth in the discus (36.37 m) and ninth in the shot put (11.80 m). Freshman Todd Paquin (Pelham, NH) was also seventh in the long jump (6.30 m). Sophomore Andrew Garcia (Brea, CA) rounded out the field as he cleared sixth in the pole vault (3.59 m).

Other finishers included junior RJ Stahelski (S. Deerfield, MA) who was fifth in the 200 (23.30) while first-year Jon Parella (Wilmington, MA) was fifth in the 400 (59.72). Freshman Julio Arzu (Lynn, MA) notched seventh in the 100 as first-year Tim Mazeika (Millbury, MA) was 11th in the 800 (2:01.29).

In relay action, the 4x100 team of Starling, Paquin, Leeds and Arzu were second overall with a time of 45.16 while the 4x400 team of Parella, Mazeika, freshman Chad Binnette (Oxford, MA) and Stahelski came in fifth (3:43.81).

Next week Worcester State heads back to UMass Dartmouth as they participate in the MASCAC/New England Alliance Championships.
