Men's Outdoor Track Turns In Top 10 Team Finish At UMass Amherst

 

Amherst, MA --- Sophomore Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty) placed in the top 10 in three events and classmate Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) had a solid leap in the triple jump to help lead the Worcester State men's outdoor track and field team to 10th overall at the UMass Amherst Minutemen Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The meet, which was won by Northeastern who scored 101.5 points, featured several top Division I, II and III squads. The Blue and Gold tallied 36.5 points to edge Keene State (34).

Truong was fourth in the long jump (20-9.75/6.34m), seventh in the 110 meter hurdles (15.87) and ninth in the 200 meters (22.74).

Alley also timed fifth in the 100 (11.34) while senior Jon Parrella (Wilmington, MA) was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles (56.73). Second-year Stephen Gannon (Foxboro, MA) sprinted to 13th in the 400 (51.14).

The fifth place 4x100 meter relay that put up a split of 43.49 included sophomore Shaun Corum (Billerica, MA), Benjamin Dussault (Assonet, MA), Parrella and senior Luke Curtis (Dudley, MA).

In the field, junior Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) cleared fourth in the high jump (6-3.25/1.91m) while classmate Steve Fleming (Ludlow, MA) stamped his ticket to the DIII New England's with 11th in the sophomore  pole vault (13-3.5/4.05m).

Gibson also marked a DIII New England standard with fifth in the triple jump (42-11.75/13.10m).

Third-year Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) and second-year Mario De Jesus (Lawrence, MA) tossed fifth (175-2/53.39m) and sixth (166-10/50.86m), respectively, in the javelin while Parris Nathan (Randolph, MA) was ninth in the shot put (43-2.50) and senior Sebastian Bilentschuk (Mansfield, MA) added 11th in the hamer (130-3/39.71m).

Sophomore Connor O'Neill (Dudley, MA) placed 38th in a deep 800 field for a personal-record (2:01.01) to pace the distance corps.

The Lancers will compete next week at MIT while junior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) will try for the school record in the decathalon at Holy Cross on Wednesday and Thursday.
