Begley, Barros Honored With ECAC Division III Athlete Of The Week Accolades

Westfield, MA --- Junior Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) and freshman Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) have both been recognized by the MASCAC and the ECAC for their outstanding accomplishments this past weekend at the Bridgewater State Invitational.

Begley claimed ECAC Division III New England Field Athlete of the Week accolades while Barros was recognized for his accomplishments as the ECAC Field Athelte of the Week. Both were also distinguished with respective MASCAC weeky accolades earlier in the week.

With his tremendous first place toss of 185-0 (56.40 meters) in the javelin, Begley qualified for the ECAC Division III Championships and he added a mark of eighth in the discus (118-0/35.96m).

For his distance in the javelin that was just inches shy of his own school record, Begley climbed to ninth in the NCAA Division III Outdoor rankings, the top spot in the Division III New England list, fourth in the ECAC standings and seventh in the Open New England leaderboard.

In his freshman semester, Begley earned the MASCAC Championship in the javelin and as a sophomore he received an All-Division III New England certificate with eighth. He smashed the previous institutional standard in the first week of the season with a heave of 186-6 (56.85m) at last year's BSU Invitational to start off his season.

Barros, who was recognized twice by the MASCAC as the Rookie of the Week during the indoor season, claims his first honor for his activities on the track. This past Saturday, Barros topped the field in the top split in the 100 meters (11.69) and 200 (23.17) as he also ran the first leg of the 4x100 meter relay squad that qualified for the ECAC Championships.

He is currently tied for sixth in the 200 Division III New England rankings and ranked 10th in the 100. Barros is one of two freshman listed in the top 10 in the 100 as he is the best first-year student-athlete in the 200 meters among those regionally.

The 4x100 meter relay that Barros helped lead-off has the best time in Division III New England and is among the top 30 in the NCAA Division III, factoring out duplicate entries.

Barros helped the 4x400 meter relay team place fifth at the ECAC Division III Indoor Championships en route to a tie for third place in the final team standings for the highest-ever program finish at the prestigious meet.

The Lancers will compete again this weekend at the Tufts Invitational.
