
Men's Outdoor Track Ranked Sixth In USTFCCCA New England Regional Index
Westfield, MA --- Senior Todd Paquin (Pelham, NH) and junior Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) highlighted the Worcester State men's track and field team's 13th place finish at the Open New England Championships this afternoon hosted by Westfield State.
WSU scored a school-record 24 team points for the fourth highest sum by a Division III institution at the prestigous meet while the final standing marked the second-best finish in program history just behind the outstanding finish of ninth set by the 1976 outdoor squad.
Paquin continued his impressive spring as the runner-up finish in the 100 meters by timing 10.67 to tie for 13th in the Division III outdoor rankings.
In the finals of the 110 meter hurdles, Gibson placed second, just behind senior Adam Scaleese (Longview, WA) of Coast Guard by 0.007 of a second as Gibson timed the fourth-fastest split nationally (14.25) as of Sunday evening.
The pair of Paquin as the second leg and Gibson at anchor also helped the 4x100 meter relay break the school record with the second-fastest time overall (41.56) as junior Duy Truong (Worcester, MA/Doherty) ran lead-off and classmate Matthew Alley (Milford, MA) was the third leg.
The 4x100 meter relay reset the previous standard which had been set on April 22 at the Holy Cross meet (41.61) as the four-some moved into 16th in the outdoor rankings.
Freshman Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) impressed with 11th as the fourth-highest Division student-athlete with a season-best split of 11.07 before he placed ninth, just 0.04 seconds off qualifying for the finals, in the 200 (22.15).
For his outstanding times on the week for a first-year student-athlete, Barros was tabbed the MASCAC Rookie of the Week.
Paquin also notched 13th in the 200 (22.35) while Troung and Alley were 19th (11.23) and 22nd (11.26) in the 100, respectively. Junior Stephen Gannon (Mansfield, MA) placed 27th in the 200 (22.91) and freshman Franklin Dallas (New London, CT) was right behind in 28th (22.94) as Troung added 21st in the 110 meter hurdles (15.33).
The 4x400 meter relay team that included senior Ramses Rafael (Lawrence, MA), Barros, freshman Shane McKinley (Melrose, MA) and Barros teamed for 21st with a time of 3:20.90.
In the field, junior David Germain (Malden, MA) cleared 13th in the high jump (6-4.75/1.95m) while senior Andrew Johnson (Thompson, CT) was 15th (6-2.75/1.90m) in the same event.
