Men's Outdoor Track Places Second Overall At Silfen Invitational

 

New London, CT --- Freshman Elijah Mawejje (Woburn, MA) cleared first in the high jump (6-6/1.98 meters), placed second in the long jump (20-3.75/6.19m) and he finished seventh in the 400 meter hurdles (59.01) to help pace Worcester State to second overall at the Conn College Silfen Invitational.

With 131 team points, the Lancers joined Tufts (181), who won the team title, as the only squads to pass the century mark for points.

Other standouts included sophomore Brett Robinson (Westboro, MA) who won the pole vault (11-7.75/3.55m) while sophomore Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) timed second in the 100 (11.09) and classmate Sam Weeks (Methuen, MA) had the runner-up toss in the shot put (45-9/13.94m).

Weeks also scored points with third in the hammer (135-6/41.22m) and fourth in the discus (134-5/40.98m).

Senior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) tallied 5,871 points in the decathlon as a runner-up to junior Tayler Vann (Coventry, CT) for the fifth best point total nationally. He won the pole vault (12-9.50/3.90m), long jump (20-2.25/6.15m) and discus (124-6/37.94m).

Senior Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) also netted 5,459 points for third place in his first career decathlon before he heaved third overall in the open javelin (177-5/54.09m). His top marks in the decathlon included first in the javelin (176-9/53.87) and the shot put (44-0/13.41m), for a Division III New England qualifier.

The 4x100 meter relay of freshman Brian Johnson (Ashburnham, MA), sophomore Shane McKinley (Melrose, MA), senior Shaun Corum (Billerica, MA) and classmate Stephen Gannon (Mansfield, MA) tied for second with a time of 44.88.

Gannon also registered sixth in the 200 (23.30) and seventh in the 400 (51.32) while freshman Mamudu Dennis (Worcester, MA/Holy Name) notched fifth in the 100 (11.41). In the 110 meter hurdles, freshman Caleb White (Webster, MA) crossed the line in seventh (16.92).

The 4x400 relay of Johnson, freshman Patrick Scheeler (Wakefield, MA), Mawejje and Gannon sprinted to 3:31.96 while the all first-year 4x800 of David Caron (Lowell, MA/Greater Lowell Tech), Devin Luce (Milford, MA), Urban Theum (Lowell, MA) and Bryant Va (Lowell, MA/Greater Lowell Tech) teamed for third overall (9:27.32).   

Senior Adam Pepin (Paxton, MA) notched a 3,000 meter steeplechase time of 11:02.29.

In the field, senior Robert White (Ludlow, MA) measured out fourth in the hammer (128-10/39.27m) and eighth in the shot put (40-4.25/12.30m). Senior Daniel Ross (Foxboro, MA) had a leap of fifth in the high jump (6-0/1.83m) as classmate Mario De Jesus (Lawrence, MA) placed fifth in the javelin (166-2/50.64m).

Junior Andrew Valle (Stoughton, MA) and classmate Shawn Seamans (Newton, MA/North) were sixth (40-4/12.29m) and seventh (40-0.75/12.21m), respectively, in the triple jump while junior Mike Piantedosi (Stow, MA) chalked sixth in the hammer (126-0/38.42m).

Junior Ryan Filliger (Haverhill, MA) finished eighth in the hammer (114-8/34.69m).

In the next week the Lancers will head to Springfield before competing at the MASCAC/Alliance Championships on April 25.
