Men's Track Takes Third Place At MASCAC Championships, Fourth In Alliance

 

Fitchburg, MA --- The Worcester State men's track and field team placed third overall at the MASCAC Championships, scoring 135 team points while finishing fourth in the New England Alliance standings (90 points).

Senior Terrence Gibson (Rockland, MA) scorched the track with a MASCAC/Alliance meet record in the 110 meter hurdles (14.38) for a time that is currenlty third nationally in the event. Gibson wrapped up his meet placing third in the 200 (22.67).

The throws were a bright spot for the Blue and Gold as the Lancers took the top spot and the runner-up in the hammer, shot put and discus to go with a final total of 57 points in the four throwing events.

Senior Robert White (Ludlow, MA) had a toss of first in the hammer throw (143-11/43.88m), classmate Matthew Begley (E. Bridgewater, MA) was the winner in the shot put (48-8.25/14.84m) and sophomore Sam Weeks (Methuen, MA) cleared first in the discus (139-9/42.60m).

Begley also put second finish in the hammer (142-7/43.46m) and discus (137-4/41.87m) before adding third in the javelin (179-9/54.78m). Weeks notched second in the shot put (46-10.25/14.28m)

The 4x100 meter relay team of freshman Mamudu Dennis (Worcester, MA/Holy Name), senior Stephen Gannon (Mansfield, MA), juinor Adam Scerra (Marlboro, MA) and sophomore Jared Barros (Taunton, MA) timed second (43.00).

Barros himself had a stellar day with second in the 200 (22.46) and third in the 100 (10.95) while Gannon recorded fifth in the 400 (50.87) and sixth in the 200 (22.67). Gannon was also the third leg of the third-place 4x400 relay that included Barros at lead-off, freshman Marquis Johnson (E. Hartford, CT) second and junior Marc George (Framingham, MA/Marion) at anchor.  

Senior Adam Pepin (Paxton, MA) had the third-best time in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10:34.36) and sophomore George timed fifth in the 800 (1:57.44), just nearly meeting the standard for the Division III New England qualifier.

Senior Jason Sliwoski (Leicester, MA) earned medals in three events with fourth in the hammer (134-2/40.90m), fifth in the 110 meter hurdles (16.33) and fifth in the pole vault (12-7.50/3.85m). Senior Daniel Ross (Foxboro, MA) cleared fourth in the high jump (6-2/1.88m) and classmate Mario De Jesus (Lawrence, MA) marked up fifth in the javelin (160-10/49.02m).

Senior Wesley Hebert (Leominster, MA) tallied sixth in the 10,000 (35:35.23) and junior Ryan Filliger (Haverhill, MA) finished sixth in the discus (121-1/36.90m).

Freshman Devin Luce (Milford, MA) was eighth in the 1,500 (4:21.96) and Hebert came back from his 10k to almost earn an all-conference medal in the 5,000, but he was 0.02 seconds away from placing in seventh (16:55.08).

Next week select Lancers will compete at the Division III New England Championships hosted by MIT starting on Friday.
