Providence, RI --- RIC junior right fielder Michelle Perrin
(Saugus, MA) and sophomore left fielder Kayla Jandreau (Plainville,
CT) helped Rhode Island College sweep a doubleheader from Worcester
State on Tuesday afternoon. With the losses the Lancers slip to
1-8-1 on the young season.
Jandreau went 3-for-4 in the first contest, while Perrin went
4-for-4 in the nightcap, as the Anchorwomen raise their record to
12-2 overall, increase their win streak to six games and stay
undefeated at home.
RIC took game one, 4-2. The Anchorwomen built a 1-0 lead in the
first inning as junior first baseman Amy Jackman (Toms River, NJ)
led off with a single and scored on sophomore shortstop Donielle
Mattoon¹s (Coventry, RI) RBI ground out.
Rhode Island College added two more in the third when sophomore
third baseman Trish Koutsulis (Peoria, AZ) plated one with a ground
out and Jackman belted an RBI triple.
The Lancers got one back in the fourth as junior third baseman
Maura Crossman (Colrain, MA) reached on a one-out
single and later came across on freshman right fielder
Lauren Besozzi's (Milford, MA) RBI single.
Jandreau added an RBI single in the sixth and the visitors
countered with a Crossman RBI single in the seventh, but junior
reliever Jenna Deveines (Lowville, NY) slammed the door for her
first save of the season. Sophomore Melanie Neece (Westfield, MA)
picked up the win (2-1), allowing just one unearned run on five
hits, to go along with six strikeouts in four innings of work.
WSC sophomore pitcher Michaella Mahoney
(Shrewsbury, MA) suffered the loss, allowing just one unearned run
on seven hits in six innings.
The hosts jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and never looked
back en route to a 7-0 win in the second half of the twinbill. It
was the Anchorwomen¹s fourth shutout on the current home
stand.
Sophomore catcher Laura Kostenblatt (Keene, NH), Koutsulis, senior
center fielder Kelli McCartin (Cranston, RI) and sophomore
designated player Chelsi Panarelli (Shrewsbury, MA) all knocked in
runs during the first frame.
RIC added two in the fourth as Perrin and sophomore second baseman
Amanda Perry (New Bedford, MA) registered RBI singles. Kostenblatt
knocked in the final run in the sixth. Sophomore pitcher Amanda
Berard (Swansea, MA) fired a two-hitter, fanning four Lancers to
earn the win (4-1). WSC junior starter Cathy
Costopoulos (Tyngsboro, MA) took the loss, allowing four
runs on eight hits in three innings.
Worcester State will travel to Anna Maria for a single seven inning
contest on Thursday at 3:30 PM while Rhode Island College hosts
Wheaton on Thursday as well.
