Worcester, MA --- Western Connecticut junior Rebecca Andruskiwec (Orange, CT-CF) went 4-for-6 while sophomore Brittany Connors (Waterford, CT) and freshman Magen Dargon (Trumbull, CT) combined for two shutouts while allowing seven hits as the Colonials swept Worcester State on Thursday 7-0 and 8-0 in non-conference softball action.

With the win WSCU climbs to 10-8 while the Lancers slip to 3-12-1.

In game one, Western Connecticut erupted for seven runs in the third frame to account for all scoring in the contest. Andruskiwec started the rally with a single and then advanced to second on a bunt and scored on a base-hit by freshman Jackie Zilniki (Riverhead, NY-LF). Junior Katelyn Farrell (Straford, CT-1B) then added another RBI on a squeeze play before sophomore Anna Levesque (Waterford, CT-DP) drove in Loren Angiolillo (Wolcott, CT-SS) to put the visitors up 3-0.

The Colonials batted around as the rest of the scoring was capped off by consecutive RBI singles by first-year Danielle Basciano (Holmes, NY-3B) and Anduskiwec.

WSC freshman Marcy Rumrill (Orange, MA) went the games first three innings allowing seven runs on eight hits while she finished with one strikeout. Classmate Katherine Figella (Feeding Hills, MA) then relieved Rumrill in the fourth and retired 12 of the last 15 batters she faced in the contest. Figella allowed just three hits while she fanned two.

Dargon recorded the win in the opening game as she went the distance and yielded just four hits while striking out six and walking two. Dargon also improved her record to 4-2 on the season. Dargon was impressive as she allowed just one batter to reach scoring position.

In the nightcap, Western Connecticut touched sophomore starter Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) for a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to go up 2-0. Angiolillo started off the game reaching on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Levesque drove her in with an RBI single. Levesque later scored in the inning when sophomore Amy Hartman (Ellington, CT-2B) belted a double to left.

The Colonials scored six more runs over the last four frames of play to go up 8-0 entering the seventh. The scoring was highlighted by a run producing single by Zilniki in the fourth to tack on a run, a two-run single by Hartman in a four-run fifth and an RBI one-bagger by Facchani.

Mahoney (3-5) tossed a complete game as she gave up eight runs (five earned) on 12 hits while she walked one and tallied four punchouts.

Connors pitched seven solid innings as she improved to 4-2. Connors allowed just three hits and three walks while she notched two strikeouts.

In the first game Anduskiwec went 2-for-3 as she led nine Colonials who recorded at least one base-hit. In the second contest Anduskiwec, Hartman and Levesque paced WSCU's 12 hit attack with two hits apiece while Hartman had three RBIs.

Freshman Ashley Howe (Winchendon, MA-CF) was the only multi-hitter for the Lancers as she went 2-for-3 in the opening game. 

Worcester State will take on Salem State this afternoon in a MASCAC twinbill starting at 3 PM while Western Connecticut will travel to Southern Maine on Friday at 2 and Plymouth State on Sunday at noon to open up Little East Conference play.
