Fort Myers, FL --- The Worcester State softball team dropped a
pair of games on Friday morning to wrap up their annual trek to
Florida. The Lancers were defeated 2-1 in nine innings by Brockport
State before they dropped a 4-2 loss to SUNY New-Paltz.
In the opening contest, Golden Eagles junior Stephanie Geer
(Binghamton, NY) had a perfect game through the first five innings.
In the top of the sixth though, the Lancers would take advantage of
a miscue in the outfield and sophomore Erica
Cordio (Leominster, MA) would notch the only base-hit of
the game to have runners on first and second, but Geer used a
strikeout to end the threat.
Junior Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) would
match Geer as she would pitch six shutout frames. Mahoney would
also strand four in scoring position in the bottom of the second,
third and fourth.
The two hurlers had a 1-2-3 seventh to force extra innings.
In the eighth, both teams stranded the go-ahead runner at third
and Worcester State converted an out at home to set the stage for
their rally in the next frame.
Worcester State started off the top of the ninth with runners on
the corners. With a man at second, sophomore Lauren
Besozzi (Milford, MA) hit a ground ball in front of the
catcher and the Golden Eagles tried to get the out at third, but
first-year Melissa Beaudry (Worcester, MA/St.
Peter-Marian) beat the throw to the plate. WSC then went up 1-0
when Besozzi came home on a passed ball.
But would Geer buckle down and got three outs to end the inning as
Beaudry was left at third.
Brockport State though would score a pair of runs in the bottom of
the ninth for the walk-off win. Sophomore Becca Pringle (Sanborn,
NY) knocked in junior Nicki Odrobina (Depew, NY) with a triple to
left field for the tie. Senior Kim Gabor (Cheektowaga, NY) then
drove in Pringle for the game-clincher with a single up the
middle.
Geer collected 12 strikeouts in the triumph while Mahoney fanned
six in the loss.
Neither pitcher allowed a walk.
In the nightcap, SUNY New-Paltz took the early 3-0 lead as they
were highlighted by an RBI ground out by senior Elizabeth May
(Commack, NY) in the second and a two-out run producing single by
classmate Rose Dovi (Cortland, NY) in the third.
Hawk junior Courtney Costello (Bayport, NY) set down 12 of the
first 13 batters she would face before the Lancers touched her up
for a run in the top of the fifth to break the shutout. Senior
Ashley Loomer (Pepperell, MA) got on with a single
and moved to third on a two-base error in the infield. Loomer was
then driven in by sophomore Jamie Jacobs
(Billerica, MA) as they made the score 3-1.
SUNY New-Paltz though would get a run back in the bottom of the
frame as fourth-year Victoria Kyle (Staten Island, NY) chipped in
an RBI single.
Worcester State would try to rally as sophomore Stephanie
Mullen (Natick, MA) blasted a solo homer with two outs in
the top of the seventh, but Costello induced a ground out to end
the game.
Costello allowed two earned runs while scattering five hits. She
also fanned four and issued one free pass.
Beaudry went the distance in the loss for WSC. She yieded four
runs (two earned) and seven hits as she also struck out one
batter.
The Lancers will begin their northern schedule with a double
header against Anna Maria on Tuesday starting at 5 PM.
