Softball Handed 1-0 Setback In Eight Innings Against Salem State

Salem, MA -- Salem State freshman Sarah Brown (North Attleboro, MA) ripped a two-out triple in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead Vikings to a thrilling 1-0 victory over the Worcester State Lancers in the first round of the MASCAC Conference Softball post-season tournament.

Brown, knocked in Jenna Lentine (Methuen, MA), who had singled, with the game-winner to force a showdown with No 1. seed Westfield State on Saturday, May 8th at 1:00 PM. Worcester State will now face Framingham State in an elimination game at 11:00 AM.
Lady Vikings' starting pitcher Katelynn Fanning went all eight innings, giving up seven hits with 10 strikeouts to earn the shutout. Worcester State's Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) went toe-to-toe with Fanning, allowing only one run in seven and two thirds innings on just five hits and eight strikeouts.

Mahoney drops to 13-9 on the season with the loss. Six of her nine setbacks have been one-run loses. Fanning improves to 18-4 with the triumph.

Worcester State (19-16) had a couple of opportunities to score in the game, but Salem State (30-7-1) took advantage of the Lancer's aggressive base-running and kept the game scoreless until winning in extra innings. 

The Lancers had a chance to go on top in the first inning, but Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA), who led off the game with a walk, was tagged out at home by Fanning after the ball got past catcher Amanda Scola (Leominster, MA).

Cordio and Jamie Jacobs (Billerica, MA) each went 2-for-3 for the Lancers. Lentine finished with a hit and run scored for Salem State, which has defeated Worcester State for the third straight time this year.
