Softball Earns Victories Over Curry, Norwich

Fort Myers, FL --- Senior Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) blasted a three-run homer against Curry and sophomore Aimee Lamoureux (E. Brookfield, MA) belted a pair of two-run homers versus Norwich as Worcester State swept both opponents this afternoon to improve their record to 3-1. 

The Lancers defeated the Colonials, 9-1, in the afternoon game before they blanked Norwich, 21-0, as both contests ended in the fifth inning by virtue of the eight-run mercy rule.

For Worcester State, the games scoring occurred in the third and fourth innings.

Trailing 1-0 entering the top of the third, the Blue and Gold took advantage of a bunt that was misplayed in the infield. With runners on first and second junior Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA) notched an RBI single and moved to second on the throw back into the infield, to set up a two in scoring position. Second-year Kylene Pease (Ashland, MA) followed by driving in a run before Mahoney sent out her first dinger of the season.

In the fourth, junior Lauren Besozzi (Milford, MA) and Cordio each recorded RBI singles while Pease added a two-run base-knock to complete the scoring for WSU.

Curry tacked on their lone run in the bottom of the second when sophomore Ashley Felzmann (Bellingham, MA) crossed home plate on a wild pitch. Felzmann reached on an error in the outfield, moved to second on a stolen base and reached third on a passed ball.

Second-year Hannah Everson (Methuen, MA) went the distance as she allowed one unearned run to go along with two hits. Everson was outstanding as she fanned 11, eight by swinging, and issued one free pass.

Senior Amanda Peters (E. Bridgewater, MA) was dealt the setback for Curry in the Colonels first game of the season. Peters went three 1/3 innings allowing six runs (one earned) on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Mahoney and Pease both chipped in with three RBIs while Cordio crossed the plate twice.

In their triumph against Norwich, Lamoureux highlighted a 14 hit effort with a two-run homer in the third and a three-run shot in the fourth. Lamoureux would finish the day 2-for-4 with five RBIs.

Pease and third-year Ashley Howe (Winchendon, MA) each made three trips to home plate while freshman Carolyn Hassett (Charlton, MA), junior Marcy Rumrill (Orange, MA) and Besozzi each scored twice. Cordio was 4-for-5 with two runs, five RBIs and one double.

Rumrill and first-year Kelly Winter (Attleboro, MA) combined for the shutout for the Blue and Gold. The pair combined for three hits while Winter fanned four for WSU.

Norwich would make five errors en route to nine earned runs for the Cadets as freshman Briana Day (Yelm, Washington) was handed the setback in the nightcap.

Worcester State takes on Richard Stockton and St. Joseph's of Maine tommorrow at the Cape Coral Complex.
