Softball Splits With Amherst, Delaware Valley

Fort Myers, FL --- Worcester State dropped a 3-1 decision to Amherst that saw the debut of first-year Kelly Winter (Attleboro, MA) in the circle before the Lancers defeated Deleware Valley 5-1 as senior Michaella Mahoney (Shrewsbury, MA) improved her record to 3-0 on the season.

In a valiant pitching performance for the Blue and Gold (6-2), Winter went the distance allowing four hits and two walks in the setback to the Lord Jeffs. Mahoney hurled a complete-game effort yielding two hits and one walk.

Worcester State scored their lone run off the game when junior Erica Cordio (Leominster, MA) drew a two-out walk, junior Jaime Jacobs (Billerica, MA) was plunked by a pitch and then Mahoney drove in Cordio from second.

Amherst freshman Theresa Kelly (Los Angeles, CA) was the difference as she yielded just one run on three hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts.

Against Delaware Valley, In the top of the fifth, WSU snapped a 1-1 game with a two-out four-run uprising as they were highlighted by Jacobs who had a double with two RBIs. Mahoney was also 2-for-4 with a plated run.

WSU closes out their Florida trip tomorrow at the Lee County Complex against Smith College at 9 PM and SUNY Brockport at 11.
