Softball Suffers A Pair of Setbacks To UMass Dartmouth, Wisconsin Oshkosh

Fort Meyers, FL --- The Worcester State softball team dropped a pair of doubleheaders this afternoon at the Lee County Complex which included a 5-1 setback to UMass Dartmouth and a 5-4 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 13 innings.

In the nightcap against Wisconsin-Oshkosh (7-4), senior teammates Kylene Pease (Ashland, MA), Hannah Everson (Methuen, MA) and Alex Kerr (Franklin, MA) along with junior Carolyn Hassett (Charlton, MA) all chipped in with two hits apiece for the Blue and Gold (3-4) .

Freshman Taylor Hanley (Wilmington, MA) broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI single with runners at first and second. Everson followed with another run producing single to help put the Lancers up 2-0.

But the Titans responded in a big way by scoring a trio of unearned runs in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded senior Kaelyn Hogan (Greendale, WI) tallied the first run on a sacrifice fly and then Hillary Treibiatowski (Plover, WI) helped score the go-ahead scores with a two-run double to left.

Worcester State immediately answered in the bottom of the sixth when Pease crossed home plate on a throwing error by the third baseman to equalize the score 3-3.

The score remained exactly the way it was until the 12th inning – with four consecutive scoreless frames as a runner advanced no farther than third because of the international tie breaker – when Haley Breyreuther (Janesville, WI) plated Hogan with two outs in the frame.

But with the game on the line, the Blue and Gold knotted up the contest at 4-4 on a run scoring infield base-knock by Hassett.

The Titans though came right back in the top of the 13th frame and made the score 5-4 with an RBI double by junior Tess Fadness (Eau Clare, WI).

Worcester State had runners on first and second in the bottom of the inning, but stranded them both as senior Courtney Wautier (Brussels, WI) retired the final three batters to preserve the win for Wisconsin Oshkosh.

Wautier (5-1), who came in relief in the sixth inning, tossed eight full innings of one-hit relief giving up the lone game-tying run in the sixth. She struck out three and walked no one.

Everson (2-2) went 13 full frames scattering 13 hits to go with five runs (zero earned) while she fanned seven and issued a trio of free passes.

The Lancers actually outslugged their counterparts 11-9 in the base-knock department in a contest that lasted nearly three hours.
