Couto Receives Nod As MASCAC Softball Player of the Week

Westfield, MA --- Sophomore Rachel Couto (Chelmsford, MA) has been selected MASCAC Player of the Week for her outstanding performance at the plate during softball's trip to Clermont, Florida this past week.

Couto batted .333 (9-27) with five doubles, seven runs and six RBI in a 5-3 stretch for the Lancers which included two base-knocks and a duo of runs in a 7-6 triumph over Southern Maine and a pair of doubles and two plated runs in an 8-7 victory over Macalester.

Her score in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the game-winning tally against USM. She was nearly flawless at third base with one miscue in 23 chances to go with a team-high 16 assists in eight games.

Through the first 10 games of the season for WSU, Couto is tied for the MASCAC lead in doubles (5) and she is third in RBI (8) while her slugging percentage (.455) and total base-knocks (10) are among the top 15.

Couto matriculated to Worcester State this past Fall after a standout freshman campaign at Endicott.

She swatted .363 (37-102) with four homers, 25 RBI and 22 runs en-route to All New England National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Second-team accolades as she helped the Gulls make an appearance in the NCAA Division III Softball Tournament.
