Worcester, MA --- Trinity senior Kristen Fahey (Cumberland, RI) drilled four three-pointers and was a perfect four-for-four from the free throw line to post a game-best 20 points as the Bantams defeated Worcester State, 58-47, this evening in non conference women's basketball action at the Lancer Gymnasium.
Trinity (6-2) was also paced by junior Kaitlin Ciarleglio (Waterbury, CT) and sophomore Carley Napier (Pittsford, NY) who each combined for 14 points while fourth-year Molly McGlynn (Sleepy Hollow, NY) grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
Junior Kaleigh Charette (Fairhaven, MA) led the Lancers (3-3) with 13 points and seven boards. Freshman Meaghan Burns (Warren, MA) also added 10 points and three steals. Sophomore Meaghan O'Keefe (Warren, MA) was also solid with six points, five caroms, four blocks and a trio of swipes.
Despite shooting 16 percent from the floor in the opening frame (4-for-25), the Lancers trailed by just 14 points at the intermission. Up 4-1 five minutes into the first period, Trinity used eight unanswered points to take a 12-1 advantage at the 11:24 mark.
The Bantams led 17-6 with 6:57 remaining, but the Lancers used four straight baskets from the charity stripe to get within seven (17-10) before the visitors outscored WSU 11-4 to close out the first period. Trinity connected on five of their nine attempts from three point land (56 percent) in the stanza.
Trinity would extend the advantage to their largest lead of the contest at 19 points on a trey by Fahey with 14:56 on the clock (35-16) as Worcester State would use an 11-2 run to close the gap to 10 points (37-27) five minutes later.
The Bantams kept the lead in double-figures until Charette converted a lay-up at the 5:15 mark (45-36). Trinity slowly built up their advantage up to 48-36, with 4:10 left in regulation. The Lancers did everything they could do to get back into the game, but the visitors would go 10-for-12 from the free throw line for the remainder of the contest to seal up the victory.
Worcester State forced Trinity to make 13 miscues in the second half as they held a 14-2 edge in points off turnovers in the final period. WSU also held a 22-12 advantage in points in the paint.
The Lancers were 0-for-13 from beyond the arc for the game, but hit 21 of their 27 free throw attempts.
WSU will play again at home on Thursday at 7 PM against Wesleyan while the Bantams will entertain nationally- ranked Western Connecticut at 7:30 on the same night.
