Women's Basketball Wins Big Against St. Joseph's

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team had its largest offensive output of the young season on Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Joseph's (L.I.) 91-42 in the consolation game of the Hunter College Tournament.

With the victory, the Lancers move to 3-2 on the season and St. Joseph falls to 0-3.

Worcester State jumped out to an early 11-point lead after the first quarter, outscoring the Golden Eagles 26-15. An 11-2 run to begin the second quarter pushed the lead to 20 and the Lancers would hold onto this lead going into halftime.

Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) led the team with 12 points on 5-8 shooting after the first half. Brittany Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) racked up five assists in the first half.

The second half was more of the same for the Lancers. A 24-point third quarter brought the lead to 35 points after a 9-0 run closed out the period. Worcester State kept their foot on the pedal and closed out the game with a 23-point fourth quarter.

Worcester State used a balanced scoring attack, with eight players scoring seven or more points. Berkel led the way with 16, Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, Mass.) added 11, and Kate Surprenant (Pelham, Mass.) finished with 10. Herring finished the game with eight points, eight rebounds, and five assists.

Alyssa Signor (Farmingville, N.Y.) paced the Golden Eagles with 16 points and N'Dea Maddox (Amityville, N.Y.) added 12.

Up next for the Lancers is a home game against Western New England on Tuesday, November 20, tipping off at 6 p.m. St. Joseph's will host The City College of New York on Tuesday, as well, at 8 p.m.
