Worcester, MA- After a top battle on Wednesday, the Lancers Women's Basketball team (7-8,1-1) remained on the road to head to perennial top in the conference Bridgewater State (9-6, 1-1) in a meeting that even this early could have pivotal post season ramifications.
Final
Worcester State: 65
Bridgewater State: 69
How it Happened:
After a single free throw in the Bears favor, Worcester would get additions from sophomores Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) and Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA) to get their offensive attack moving. Senior Katie Hurynowicz (Tynsgboro, MA) along with sophomore Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) and Hannah Manzaro (West Brookfield, MA) would contribute to the scoring for Worcester to claim the 16-11 lead after the first quarter. The second quarter found the Bears reclaiming the lead after a 8-0 run before sophomore Ava Lemanski (Clinton, MA) layed in the ball and quickly released a jumper to help change the flow of the game. Waldron would hit a deep three to tie the teams up 23-23 in the final two minutes before the half. One final Bears layup would provide the two point cushion into halftime.
The third quarter would find both teams trading baskets that would find both teams tied up at 36-36 before a late run of points would put them ahead by eight for the fourth quarter. Bridgewater would continue to expand their lead in the final regulation quarter, going up as much as 12 before Worcester began to settle in and begin their dig into the lead. Worcester would tie the game up at 55-55 off a senior Abby St. Martin (Putnam, CT) staple three with just four minutes to go to force a high intensity ending in the first conference meeting of the season. With teams trading leads and ties for the final minutes it would come down to the line to determine the game, with Bridgewater making five essential free throws to stave off the Worcester comeback to claim the 69-65 win.
Both Hurynowicz and Lomonaco would end the game with 18 points while sophomore Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) would bring down eight boards. Worcester would have a dominant performance from the court shooting for 49.1% but the 66.7% free throw shooting of the Bears was just enough for them today.
What's Next:
Worcester State (7-9, 1-2) will remain on the road Monday for an MLK meeting with Wesleyan College at 6pm.
