Worcester, MA- Coming off a huge win last night that saw Worcester record nine goals, the Lancers Women's Ice Hockey team (1-4-0, 1-1-0) are hoping to still have that scoring prowess as they welcome the Anna Maria AMCATs to Fidelity Bank.
Final
Worcester State: 5
Anna Maria: 2
How it Happened:
The game would get off to a slippery and slick start as each team appeared to work to find their footing of the fresh ice. Slowly but surely each team began to find their groove and momentum with the Lancers taking the early offensive charge that ended with a goal by sophomore Olivia Fehl (Sergeant Bluff, IA) who found the net off a winning draw of graduate student Amy MacGlashing (Marlborough, MA) to sophomore Madelyn Franta (Superior, WI) who sent the puck towards cage only for it to ding off the post to Fehl. The final 10 minutes saw an uptick in activity for Anna Maria as they went on the power play, but the Lancer penalty kill was up to the challenge, ending any danger. The teams would be nearly dead even after 20 minutes with the AMCATs taking the 14-13 shot edge.
The second period would see the Lancers continue their offensive success as they scored a pair of unassisted goals to grab a 3-0 lead. The first came off a center ice breakthrough by first year Emily Johns (Clinton, MA) who sent luck sailing over the shoulder of Anna Maria keeper Stevie Levesque. Just four minutes later, in the 18', Worcester's sophomore Rebekah Garbarino (Holly Springs, NC) would sail down the left wing and launch a shot that would drop into the netting for goal three. Two power plays for Worcester would help create the needed fatigue on the Anna Maria defense that went along with Worcester claiming the 34-15 shot advantage through the second.
The third period would find the AMCATs back in offensive form and mounting a comeback of their own. The power kill was the weak point for the Lancers in the third as Anna Maria was able to score off two they were awarded in the period with one jumping junior Kelsey Czerniawski (Chicopee, MA) and the second off a perfectly played tip- in. The final two minutes would find Anna Maria electing for the extra skater, pulling their goalie, in a bid to tie the action and force over time. With a minute remaining being announced over the loudspeaker, sophomore Madelyn Franta would score the empty netter to push Worcester up 4-2. In a bold strategy, Anna Maria elected to keep the keeper out for the final seconds resulting in John's grabbing her second of the day and the Worcester 5-2 victory.
Czerniawski would end the night with 23 saves while the Lancers would end with 45 shots in the outing.
