Lancers Hold Strong in Black Ribbon Game to Claim Victory over AMCATs

Worcester, MA- Tonight's Worcester State Women's Ice Hockey Game (9-9-1, 6-3-1) is being played in honor of sophomore Men's Ice Hockey student-athlete Evan Armit, who was earlier this season diagnosed with Melanoma. Both programs have united around their support and raising awareness, and with the help of the Rosen Cancer Awareness Fund, designed Black Jersey's to be worn during the game with donations and bids being accepted leading up to the game. Proceeds from tonight's game will go to the Armit Family and the Rosen Fund, created by Gregg '86 and Pam '87 Rosen, which aims to provide a robust curriculum that supports peer to peer education regarding early cancer detection.  Raising Awareness in our young people, particularly Worcester State students in the field of public health, can effectively expedite these important educational initiatives to curb the prevalence of late stage cancer and increase longevity.

Final

Worcester State: 3

Anna Maria: 1

How it Happened:

The Lancers took an early lead in the first period off a snappy goal from senior Sydney Vautour (Hamilton, MA). Worcester State's  goalie junior Kelsey Czerniawski (Chicopee, MA) had dominant and quick saves throughout the first in addition to the defense being on breaking up the Anna Maria opportunities. The Lancers were able to hold off the Amcats for the remainder of the period to end with a 1-0 lead.

Early in the 2nd period Anna Maria had a quick shot to tie the game 1-1. Both teams were consistent at taking shots but neither was able to land the puck in the back of the net to separate themselves.  Physicality was a huge part of this 2nd period. Worcester State played down 4 on 5 due to 2 penalties throughout the 2nd period but their powerkill remained effective, preventing the AMCATs from gaining ground and carrying the lead into the third.

The physicality from the 2nd period was overflowing in the 3rd as there were 6 penalties between Worcester and Anna Maria. Early in the 3rd period the Lancers took the lead again with a goal scored by senior Kiersten Erickson (Broomfield, CO) to regain the Worcester lead at 2-1. Towards the end of the period the Lancers made the game a 2 goal difference with a goal by first year Emily Johns (Clinton, MA). Worcester would keep the lead to finish the 3rd period finishing with a 3-1 victory in a crucial conference battle.

Czerniawski ended the night with 33 saves in the action.
