Box Score

Worcester, MA ---Sophomore attacker Maeghan Ross (Wrentham, MA) scored a game-best seven goals to help propel Emerson to a 15-7 win over Worcester State this evening at Coughlin Stadium in non-conference women's lacrosse action. With the victory the Lions have now won six straight to improve their record to 7-2 while the Lancers slip to 4-3.

Six Emerson players had at least one goal as they were highlighted by second-year Katie Peters (Acton, MA) who scored a hat-trick with a team-high six ground balls while classmate Katie Dodge (W. Newbury, MA) notched a pair of tallies. Freshman Kayla Dowd (Avon, CT) also chipped in with two caused turnovers and a pair of ground balls.

Junior Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, MA) recorded a team best five points with two goals and three assists while senior Shannon Feeley (W. Springfield, MA) finished with two goals and a pair of helpers. Third-year Kim Vail (W. Newbury, MA) picked up a game-best eight ground balls while she also caused three miscues.

With 75 career assists Feeley is now only two dishes away from breaking Ann Clark's career mark of 77 helpers.

Emerson controlled the pace of the first stanza as they took 10 of their 16 shots in the opening 15 minutes of the contest, but the Lions only ended up with a 3-2 lead. Ross and WSC junior Abby Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) then traded goals before the visitors scored three unanswered goals to take a 7-3 lead at the intermission.

The Lions came out of the gate scoring three free position goals to help Emerson take 10-3 edge, ten minutes into the period, before Feeley stopped the bleeding with a goal at 18:13.

Emerson then opened up a 13-4 lead after three more tallies and the visitors then substituted their bench with six minutes left in the contest. At that point the Lancers rattled off three quick goals in a span of 33 seconds to get within six (13-7), but Peters and Ross each scored to bring the lead back up to eight with two minutes left as Emerson would control the ball to cruise ahead for the victory.

After the first half both teams ended even in ground balls (11-11) and turnovers (WSC 12; EME-11), but the Lancers dominated the turf in the second half (12-7) and they forced more miscues than they committed as well (12-7).

Freshman Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) took the loss in the cage for the Lancers as she ended the evening with 10 saves while her counterpart, first-year Kristen DeTroia (Bridgewater, NJ), stopped nine of 17 shots for the Lions.

Worcester State will have "Senior Night" on Thursday in a non-conference contest against Framingham State at 7 PM before continuing their NEWLA slate with Becker at noon on Saturday. The Lions will travel to St. Josephs (CT) on Saturday for a 1 PM draw.
