Worcester State 17, Rhode Island College 13
Providence, RI --- The Worcester State women’s lacrosse team held Rhode Island College scoreless for 22:09 in the second half, scoring five straight goals in that time span, to defeat the Anchorwomen, 17-13, and pick up their first win of the season.
Senior midfielder Abby Consenza (Shrewsbury, MA) led the way for the visitors (1-1) with five goals, while classmate attacker Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, MA) registered two goals and five assists for seven points, in the win.
RIC (1-1) sophomore attacker Nicky Drolet (Somersworth, NH) equaled Cosenza’s offensive output with five markers, while adding two helpers, for seven points in a losing effort. Freshman midfielder Libby Lazar (Wakefield, MA) scored four times.
Worcester State sophomore goalkeeper Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) made 13 saves to even her record at 1-1. RIC freshman goalkeeper Kerri Montgomery (Franklin, MA) made 14 saves in the loss (1-1)
The Lancers jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first 4:28 of the game as junior midfielder Colleen Manning (Plainville, MA), Cosenza and Jamieson all tallied. RIC responded by scoring the next five goals to take a 5-3 lead. Drolet and Lazar each scored twice during the run.
Cosenza quickly tied the game up, 5-5, by scoring the next two goals. The Anchorwomen held a 9-6 advantage with 7:08 left in the first stanza as junior attacker Suany Almonte (Warwick, RI), Lazar and sophomore attacker Molly Voyer (Lincoln, RI) put the hosts on top.
Worcester State then rattled off four goals in a row and outscored the Anchorwomen, 6-2, over the remainder of the half to take a 12-11 lead into the break.
The Lancers scored 1:37 into the second half to start their run as senior midfielder Kim Vail (West Newbury, MA) found the back of the net. Worcester State used a possession offense for much of the half and Rhode Island College was unable to get any momentum going. Drolet’s fifth goal of the game came with just 7:51 left, and Lazar’s marker with 20 seconds remaining, were the only goals over the final 30 minutes for the hosts.
Worcester State held the advantage in shots (39-29) and draw controls (19-12), while the Anchorwomen grabbed four more ground balls (33-29). Both teams were whistled for 37 fouls.
Lazar had a solid game with six ground balls, five caused turnovers and three draw controls. Freshman midfielder Courtney McKiernan (Hope, RI) also had six ground balls.
WSC senior midfielder Amanda Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) had three goals, two assists and a game-best seven ground balls. Junior center Carly MacIntyre (Townsend, MA) posted two goals, two assists, six ground balls and four draw controls.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Sage on Saturday, March 27 at 1 PM while the Lancers will entertain UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday at 3:30 PM.
