Women's Lacrosse Wins 2OT Thriller against UMass Dartmouth

Worcester, MA --- Senior Abby Cosenza (Shrewsbury, MA) the decisive goal on an assist  by junior Carley McIntyre (Townsend, MA) to give Worcester State a 11-10 triumph over UMass Dartmouth in non conference women’s lacrosse action this evening at Coughlin Field. 

With the win and the loss, both team’s records now stand at 2-1 on the season.

The Lancers were propelled by third-year Colleen Manning’s (Plainville, MA) hat trick while Cosenza and McIntyre each added three points with a two goals and a helper each. Senior Kim Vail (W. Newbury, MA) notched a team-best four balls as she added a pair of caused turnovers while classmate Brittany Jamieson (Foxboro, MA) also caused a pair of miscues on the offensive end of the field.

UMD senior Allison Trearchis (Tyngsboro, MA) sent in a game-best five goals while junior Gillian Carey (Gloucester, MA) finished with two goals and an assist as she also scooped up a squad-high four ground balls.

Heavy rain played a factor in tonight’s contest, but both teams played sloppy as they did not take care of the ball. The Lancers held slim edges in ground balls (21-19), caused turnovers (6-2) and turnovers (24-22) as the Corsairs held the advantage in total shots for the game with a 34-27 lead.

Sophomore Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) improves to 2-1 with the win as she collected 11 saves for the Lancers. First-year Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA) drops to 0-1 as she started the second stanza and played through both overtime periods. Donovan ended the evening with eight stops.

This weekend both teams will open up their respective conference schedules with afternoon games on Saturday. Worcester State travels to Becker for a noon time date while the Corsairs will entertain Plymouth State at 4 PM.
