Women's Lacrosse Drops 16-8 Decision To UMass Dartmouth

North Dartmouth, MA --- UMass Dartmouth senior Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, MA) poured in all six of her goals in the second half to help lead the Corsairs to a 16-8 triumph over Worcester State in non-conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon.

With the win UMD improves to 2-3 on the season while the Lancers slip to 0-4.

Freshman Taylor Corsano (Bourne, MA) also netted a hat-trick with three helpers while junior Allison O'Rourke (Weymouth, MA) potted two goals and dished out a contest-best four assists. Third-year Brittany Partridge (Littleton, MA) also recorded a game-high six ground balls with a pair of miscues for the hosts.

Worcester State was led by freshman Shawna Strazzere (Billerica, MA) who tallied four goals as senior Carley MacIntyre (Townsend, MA) added two goals and one assist. Senior Karla Rotondi (Tewksbury, MA) led the way defensively as she finished with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Angelina Donovan (Medford, MA) posted the win for UMass Dartmouth as she stopped 14 of the 22 shots she saw on net including nine of 10 in the second period alone. Junior Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) shouldered the setback as she ended the contest with nine saves.

After the Lancers went up 2-0 early on consecutive free position goals, four different Corsairs registered markers to stake the 4-2 advantage with 13:34 in the first half. But the Blue and Gold would go on a 5-2 run to close out the stanza with the 7-6 edge at the intermission.

But UMass Dartmouth would explode for a double-digit goal margin in the second half as they would outscore Worcester State 10-1 in the frame. Outstanding play by Kinchla helped the hosts go on their big run as she sent in the first four goals of the period, for the 10-7 lead midway though.

Strazzere would stop the bleeding with her fourth goal at 8:56 to make it an 11-8 game, but the Corsairs would score five consecutive tallies to end the contest with two from Kinchla and a pair from Corsano.

Despite losing the contest, Worcester State held slight margins in shots (30-29) and ground balls (25-23) while UMD led in shots on goal (25-22).

After WSU opened the game with two free position goals, they were 0-for-8 the rest of the way as the Corsairs were 3-for-12 for the contest.

The Lancers will look for their first win against Westfield State at home on Saturday in a NEWLA matchup at 12 PM while UMass Dartmouth opens LEC play by entertaining Southern Maine on Saturday at 1 o'clock.
