Women's Lacrosse Falls To Westfield State, 21-5

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Maura Stack (Wilbraham, MA) recorded a career-best six points with five goals and one assist helped lead Westfield State to a 21-5 victory over Worcester State in NEWLA action on Sunday afternoon at Coughlin Field.

The Owls (4-1, 1-0 NEWLA) were also paced senior teammates Rachel Dionne (Feeding Hills, MA) and Laura Chiricosta (Lexington, MA) and junior  Carly Keeley (Feeding Hills, MA) who each found the net four times for the visitors.

Kelly also finished with six draw controls and three ground balls to pace the Westfield State while Dionne notched totals four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sophomore Ari Colella (Franklin, MA) chipped in with two goals for Westfield State.

Senior Colleen Manning's (Plainville, MA) four goals and one helper propelled the Lancers (0-5, 0-2 NEWLA) as junior Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, MA) ended the contest with five draws. Senior Karen Feeley (W. Springfield, MA) and freshman Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) each picked up a trio of ground balls for WSU.

Second-year Jill Robinson (Salem, MA) stopped eight of the 13 shots she saw on net in the win while junior Haley Erickson (Saugus, MA) collected 13 saves in the defeat.

The Owls opened the game with a 9-0 run and finished with the 13-3 advantage at the intermission. Dionne, Keeley and Kelly all registered two goals in the period as Stack finished with three for the visitors

Westfield State would score eight straight times in the second period before Manning tallied the final two markers for the Blue and Gold to end the game for the final score.

The Owls enjoyed a commanding 41-14 edge in shots while the Lancers led in ground balls, 17-16. Westfield State held a 15-12 margin in draw controls as they were 5-for-7 on free-position shots – with three goals coming from Dionne and two from Stack. Worcester State was 0-for-5 from inside the eight meter semi-circle.

The Lancers will take a week off and play again next Saturday against Becker at home at 12 PM. Westfield State will entertain and play Bridgewater State in a key 7 o'clock NEWLA matchup on Thursday.
