Worcester State 2, Wheaton 1
Worcester, MA --- Worcester State put an end to visiting #13 Wheaton's 36-game regular season unbeaten streak this evening with a 1-0 victory. With the win the Lancers improve to 1-0-1 while Wheaton falls to 2-1.
Senior Tiffany Rotatori (Auburn, MA) notched the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute on a cross from freshman Danielle Clifford (Attleboro, MA). The marker was Rotatori's third after she notched a pair of goals in the Lancers 2-2 tie in double overtime against Colby-Sawyer last Friday.
The Lancers had a golden opportunity to add an insurance goal as time wound down in the 88th minute. Senior Amanda Santos (Milford, MA) had a clear shot at the net and another from the ricochet from freshman keeper Lindsay Leddy's (Warwick, RI) deflection.
Both teams played exceptional defense throughout the contest. Wheaton held a 21-12 edge in shots and a 6-1 advantage in corners.
Sophomore Erin Doherty (Uxbridge, MA) was spectacular in the net for Worcester State as she registered six saves to earn the shutout. Freshman Kasey Frasier (Bennington, VT) started the game for Wheaton between the pipes as she tallied three stops in 45 minutes. Leddy started the second half and added five saves for the Lyons.
The Lancers will travel down Park Ave to face MIT at WPI on Friday at 4 PM while the Lyons face nationally ranked Western Connecticut on Saturday at 3 o'clock.
