Western Connecticut 3, Worcester State 1
Danbury, CT --- Senior Co-Captain Catherine
Nathans (New Fairfield, CT) got things going early in the
game for Western Connecticut State University when she scored her
fifth goal of the season in the opening minutes of WestConn's 3-1
victory over Worcester State College Thursday evening at the
Westside Athletic Complex.
After Nathan's early goal, the only drama in the first half came at
the 18:10 mark when Worcester State's Tiffany
Rotatori (Auburn, MA) ran past three WestConn defenders
and blasted a shot at the WestConn goal. Colonial goalkeeper,
Shannon Cawley (Willimatic, CT), made a diving
save to prevent the goal and preserve WestConn's 1-0 lead.
In the second half, WestConn extended the lead to 2-0 when
Amanda Genova (New Milford, CT) beat the Worcester
State goalie off a free kick from 15 yards out. Five minutes
later, Angela Wozniak (Ludlow, MA) was credited
with her second goal of the season when her corner kick deflected
off a Worcester State defender and into the goal for a 3-0 WestConn
lead. Worcester State finally broke through the Colonial
defense when Katelyn Bonetti (Plymouth, MA)
intercepted an errant pass attempt by WestConn's goalkeeper and
lofted a high arcing shot into the undefended Colonial goal.
For the game, Cawley made four saves in goal for the Colonials and
earns her sixth win of the season. Rachel
Armenti (West Boylston, MA) finished with six saves for
Worcester State, but takes the loss in goal.
With the win WestConn's season record stands at 6-3, while
Worcester State falls to 6-4-1.
WestConn travels to Little East Conference rival Plymouth State on
Saturday, October 11th. Game time is slated for 1:00pm.
