Women's Soccer Loses To Colby-Sawyer, 2-1, In Season Opener

Worcester, MA --- Sophomore Lauren Bernard (Manchester, NH) netted a pair of first-half goals to lead Colby-Sawyer to a 2-1 victory over Worcester State in non-conference women's soccer action this afternoon at Coughlin Field.

The Chargers earn their first-ever triumph against the Lancers as the series is now even at 1-1-2 overall. The two teams have faced each other to start off the season in each of the last four years.

Bernard's first goal came in the 21st minute on a breakaway, following a long pass from sophomore Stephanie Huntley (Woodbury, CT) from the Colby-Sawyer defensive zone.

Bernard's second tally came four minutes later when after her initial bid at the Lancer net ricocheted off of the post. She then gathered the rebound and put in the goal, giving Colby-Sawyer 2-0 lead going into halftime.

Worcester State got back into game in the 70th minute, when freshman Kaleigh Evans (Saugus, MA) scored her first career goal, off of a throw-in from junior Mariah Messina (Tewksbury, MA), to help WSU cut into the lead.

The Lancers would notch six of their 12 shots in the second half over the next 20 minutes of play, but they failed to take advantage of their opportunities and Charger junior net minder Shayln Spencer (Natick, MA) turned aside three of them.

All told, the Blue and Gold would finish with commanding margins in shots (19-8) and corners (12-1).

The total number of corners is the highest total in nearly six seasons as the Lancers made the same amount in a victory against Westfield State on October 28, 2005.

Spencer was sensational as she collected nine saves for Colby-Sawyer, while her counterpart senior Angieszaka Sychtysz (Warren, MA), stopped three shots for the Lancers.

Both teams will play non-conference opponents on the road this Saturday.  Worcester State travels to Wheaton College for a 2 PM game while Colby-Sawyer plays at Rivier College at 2:30 PM.
