Norton, MA --- Sophomore Joy-Marie Fernandes (Woburn, MA) and junior Cassey Muse (Candia, NH) each tallied second-half goals in Wheaton College's 2-2 tie with Worcester State College in non-conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Mirrione Stadium.
Following a scoreless first half, the Lyons struck twice in the opening 2:06 of the second half to grab a 2-0 lead. Fernandez buried a shot from 25 yards out to put Wheaton in front 1-0 at 45:47, then Muse knocked in a rebound off a shot from sophomore Kristina Braga (Lowell, MA) at 47:06 to push the lead to 2-0.
The Lancers finally broke through at 83:44 when freshman Alyssa Sawyer (West Springfield, MA) netted her first collegiate goal. Junior Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, MA) drilled a shot past Lyons senior goalkeeper Erin Cawley (West Springfield, MA) and off the crossbar, and Sawyer chipped in the rebound. Less than 60 seconds later, Beckman scored on a cross from junior Nicole Wynne (Hanson, MA) to even the score.
Each team was credited with six shots in overtime, but neither team was able to break the tie. The best scoring chance for either team in the extra sessions came shortly after the opening draw in the first overtime when Braga got off a shot that struck the left post.
Overall, Wheaton held a 19-14 edge in shots on the afternoon.
Cawley finished with two saves while Lancers senior goalkeeper Angieszaka Sychtysz (Warren, MA) registered four stops.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday when they travel to Suffolk for an 11 AM match. The Lancers will head down Park Ave for a for a 7 PM match with WPI on Tuesday.
